This page shows how Birmingham is classified for the following 4 measures of social mobility:
- Promising prospects
- Middle group
- Conditions of childhood
- Unfavourable group
- Labour market opportunities for young people
- Least favourable group
- Innovation and growth
- Middle group
How areas are classified
Each measure of social mobility combines data from multiple indicators into a single ‘composite’ score.
For each measure (for example, ‘Innovation and growth’), 203 local authorities in the UK are classified according to their composite scores. The following labels show how each area is classified:
- most favourable group
- favourable group
- middle group
- unfavourable group
- least favourable group
The groups are not equally sized – the middle group is larger because most local authorities are very near the average.
